Maiasaura

Maiasaura was a 9-metre long herbivore that lived during the Upper Cretaceous Period.

How did Maiasaura get its name?

"Maiasaura" comes from two words:

  • Maia meaning "good mother" in Greek, and
  • Saurus meaning "lizard" in Latin

So if you put the words together, the name means "good mother lizard."

Why?

Maiasaura was the first dinosaur thought to have fed its hatchlings while they were in the nest; most other dinosaurs did not mother their babies like Maiasaura did.

Maiasaura
Adult Maiasaura walked on all fours, but the young Maiasaura walked on their hind legs.

What else is really cool about Maiasaura?

  • Maiasaura lived in huge groups, numbering about 10,000 animals in one herd.
  • Maiasaura eggs were as large as ostrich eggs.
